ABOUT OUR NAME
In Mahayana Buddhism, Jizo (Kstigarbha in Sanskrit) Bodhisattva is a personification of the saving power of Compassion that manifests even in the midst of the most difficult situations. Jizo is often depicted in pictures and statues as a Buddhist monk, simply clad and carrying the monk’s staff in one hand and the Wish-fulfilling Jewel in the other. Jizo Bodhisattva personifies cosmic Compassion extending to all in greatest need: those in states of hellish confusion and pain; those who find themselves in dangerous situations far from home and family, such as pilgrims and travelers; and those who are especially vulnerable, such as children, pregnant women, and animals.
At North Cascades Buddhist Priory, our shrine to Jizo Bodhisattva stands beside a little spring, the waters of which flow down to a wetland, then to a stream, then to the Nisqually River, and then out into Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean. Thus does the Compassion of the eternal Buddha Nature flow out endlessly from sources unseen to all beings and all need.
